CCL history

  • September 22-23, 2020 VMU CCL and CLARIN-LT centre organised the 9-th International conference Baltic HLT2020. The proceedings of the conference were published by IOS Press as EBOOK – “Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective”.
  • 31 03 2015 VMU, KTU and VU founded a national consortium CLARIN-LT and soon started to implement the project Lithuanian Membership in International Research Infrastructure – Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure European Research Infrastructure Consortium (CLARIN ERIC). During the project a number of developments have been started: 
    • compilation of Lithuanian treebank ALKSNIS,
    • CLARIN-LT website,
    • CLARIN-LT repository,
    • http://corpus.vdu.lt
  • 25 10 2014 Lithuania became an official member of the CLARIN ERIC infrastructure and CCL became a CLARIN centre.
  • 2012-2015 KLC together with VMU Faculty of Informatics and KTU implemented a project Lithuanian language syntax-semantic analysis system for corpus, Lithuanian Internet and public sector applications, which is funded by the Action 3 of the Economic Growth Operational Program Information Society for All in Lithuanian VP2-3.1-IVPK-12-K), during which the Lithuanian language resources were accumulated, several basic Lithuanian language analysis tools were created or improved (e.g. morphological and syntax analyzers, named entity identifier, General Ontology of the Lithuanian Language, etc.), as well as the portal SEMANTIKA.LT was created.
  • 26-27 09 2014  For the second time, CCL hosted the Sixth International Conference on Human Language Technologies – the Baltic Perspective.
  • February 2013 CCL began hosting “CCL Fridays” meetings, which are held once a month. During informal meetings, researchers working in the field of corpus and computer linguistics present their latest research, projects, discuss topical issues, and find opportunities for collaboration.   • December 2011 saw the launch of the new CCL website. It was designed by the staff and students of the Department of Contemporary Arts, VMU. The website was supported by the Lithuanian Science Council.
  • 2011 Andrius Utka became the head of the centre.
  • 08 07 2009 CCL (that represents the Vytautas Magnus university) together with other institutions founded the association of Lithuanian Language in Information Technologies. The goal of the association is to observe activities and tendencies of development within the sector of information technologies and the Lithuanian language, as well as to be involved in planning and implementation of scientific research projects and experimental development.
  • 03 04 2009 CCL and the Lithuanian Language Department have organised the conference “The Lithuanian Language and Modern Technologies: Opportunities and Problems”.
  • 27 02 2009 senior researcher assoc. prof. dr. Asta Kazlauskienė gave a public lecture and completed the habilitation procedure. The topic of the habilitation is “Research of Spoken Lithuanian Language: Phonetics and Accentology”.
  • Since 2008 CCL has been taking part in the cluster of scientific research at the Vytautas Magnus university „Computational research of text and sound: development and application of resources and technologies“ (headed by prof. habil. dr. R. Marcinkevičienė).
  • In 2007 CCL launched the English-Lithuanian machine translation system (http://vertimas.vdu.lt), which was financed according to the Lithuanian Single Programming Document for 2004–2006, 3rd priority, 3rd measure “Development of Information Technology Services and Infrastructure”.
  • October 4–5, 2007 CCL and The Institute of the Lithuanian Language organized an international conference „The Third Baltic Conference on Human Language Technologies“. Scientific areas: philology and computer science.
  • November 24, 2006 CCL organized a seminar “The Works by CCL: Parallel Corpus”.
  • November 7, 2006 Prof. Johann Haller, the head of Machine Translation Department at the Saarland University, gave the lecture on machine translation.
  • 2006 Erika Rimkutė defended the dissertation „Morphological Disambiguation of the Lithuanian Language Corpus”. The dissertation was based on the morphologically annotated corpus of the Lithuanian language.
  • August 2006 the automatic morphological annotation tool Lemuoklis was created.
  • June 2006 has started the project RESIST (Resilience for Survivability in IST) of the Sixth Framework Programme, where CCL takes part as a creator of terminological ontology.
  • June 4–13, 2006 the known lexicographer from New Zealand dr. Philip Mathew paid a visit to CCL.
  • 2006 donelaitis.vdu.lt started to run on a new server. The purchase was in the framework of the project “Preservation of National Identity under Conditions of Globalization: Annotated Corpus of the Lithuanian Language (ALKA)”, which was financed by the Lithuanian State Science and Study Foundation according the programme „Priority Trends for Scientific Research and Experimental Development in Lithuania”.
  • June 15–16, 2005 Prof. Jef Verschueren, the president of International Pragmatics Association and the dean of the Germanic Languages and Literature faculty in the Antwerpen University, visited CCL and gave a series of lectures.
  • 2005–2006 carried out the project „Preservation of the Lithuanian Language under conditions of globalisation“, which is financed by the Lithuanian State Science and Study Foundation according the programme „Priority Trends for Scientific Research and Experimental Development in Lithuania. “Preservation of National Identity under Conditions of Globalization: Annotated Corpus of the Lithuanian Language (ALKA)”.
  • 2005 The Parallel Corpus search facility is implemented in the CCL website.
  • 2005 Irma Zeller defended the dissertation “Automatic recognition and processing of terminology”. The dissertation was based on the Lithuanian–German parallel corpus of EU documents.
  • 2005 CCL took part in the project “Accentuation of the Lithuanian Language in the Internet”.
  • 2004–2005 Loic Bouzou, doctoral student from the Paris National Institute of Eastern Languages and Civilization, had a half-year internship at the CCL.
  • 2004 CCL took part in the project Web Information Translation Facility (WITFA).
  • 2004 Andrius Utka defended the dissertation “Statistical Identification of Text Functions”. The dissertation was based on the data from the Corpus of the Contemporary Lithuanian Language.
  • 2003 CCL prepared master studies programme Computational linguistics taught at the department of the Lithuanian language.
  • 06 09 2002 the head of CCL dr. R. Marcinkevičienė defended the first dissertation of habilitation on the topic of corpus linguistics “Corpus Linguistics and the Usage of the Lithuanian Language”.
  • 2002 Corpus of the Contemporary Lithuanian Language was presented in the exhibition “InfoBalt 2002”, where it was acknowledged as the best scientific work of 2002 and won the name of the best Lithuanian product in the field of informational technology, telecommunications and electronics.
  • 2001–2002 CCL took part and presented its projects in the national exhibitions “InfoBalt” (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006), “InfoKaunas” (2002 05), “Mokslas ir universitetinės studijos” (2002 05).
  • 05 04 2001 CCL organized the seminar “Vytautas Magnus University for the Informative Society”.
  • 2000 special issue of VMU quarterly research journal “Darbai ir Dienos” (24) entirely devoted for corpus linguistics was published.
  • 2000 Jurgita Mikelionienė defended the first dissertation based on the Corpus of Modern Lithuanian “New Lexis of the Lithuanian Language 1991–1996”.
  • 2000–2006 CCL took part in the programme “The Lithuanian Language in the Information Society 2000-2006” of the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language.
  • 1998–2005 The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language supported continuous compiliation the Corpus of Modern Lithuanian.
  • 1998–2001 CCL took part in the international project TELRI II, COPERNICUS programme.
  • 1998–1999 CCL took part in the international project ELAN (European Language Activity Network), MLIS programme.
  • In autumn of 1998 Jaroen Klumper a master student from the Twente University had an internship at the CCL. For his master thesis he created a multilingual lexicographic tool MULDI (Multi Lingual Database Interface) under supervision of assoc. Prof. Jan Kuper and assoc. prof. Dr. R. Marcinkevičienė.
  • 1997–2002 CCL was a member of TRACTOR association of users.
  • 15 10 1997 CCL became a member of international association of TELRI.
  • 14–20 04 1997 CCL organized II International seminar Language Applications for a Multilingual Society in the framework of TELRI project.
  • 04 02 1997 Lithuania State Science and Studies Foundation supported compilation of the Corpus of Modern Lithuanian.
  • 01 1996 Open Society Fund Lithuania sponsored purchased of the hardware for the CCL.
  • 26 01 1995 official opening ceremony of CCL took place.
  • 01 01 1995 CCL took part in TELRI project, COPERNICUS programme.
  • 30 12 1994 CCL got a room in K. Donelaičio str. 52.
  • 01 06 1994 VMU Senate founded CCL and confirmed its regulations.
  • 01 09 1993 a laboratory assistant of the department of the Lithuanian language began to prepare A Frequentative Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language.
  • 31 01 1992 the department of Linguistics, Stockholm university donated a PC.
